“We’ll evolve from a world of hydrocarbon dependency to a mixture of hydrocarbon and alternative energy use. Vast quantities of liquid hydrocarbons (oil and gas) will be left behind in the ground, just as solid hydrocarbons (coal) are being left behind today.”

                       - Chris Gibson-Smith,
                       Managing Director, BP

The U.S. government understands the increasing importance of energy security. The Pentagon co-funded a research project with the Rocky Mountain Institute called Winning the Oil End Game, authored by Amory B. Lovins, to examine the economic, social, and political costs of petroleum dependency in the U.S., including the costs associated with protecting foreign oil supply lines. Countless publications examine the social, economic, and political effects of petroleum dependency; Winning the Oil Endgame offers practical and insightful solutions that are fueled by sound economics, not government subsidies or environmental ethics.

Winning the Oil Endgame’s strategy to deal with the rising costs of growing oil scarcity includes increasing the efficiency of current oil usage and increasing the use of domestic, renewable biofuels, like biodiesel. The Rocky Mountain Institute estimates that an aggregate investment of $180 billion in these strategies over the next decade could ultimately save Americans $130 billion each year. The move to domestic renewable fuels is economical and will bolster the American economy by supporting domestic agriculture and industry.

The U.S. government recognizes that domestic, renewable fuels like biodiesel are an integral component to weaning Americans from foreign oil while fostering greater energy and national security. When the U.S. military advances domestic, renewable technologies in lieu of foreign oil, the U.S. will be able to “treat oil-rich countries the same as countries with no oil,” which will instill a greater sense of security and well-being for all Americans. Not only is the government (federal, state, and local) supporting biofuels through enacted legislation and tax-cuts, it is also using biodiesel (B20) in its own vehicles that are fighting to preserve American security.
